We’ve taken a bit of time off of the blog over the summer holidays but we are back with a bang tonight speaking to the amazing Emma Arnold, Party QUEEN and founder of GlampUnders - who is Mum to three children, Madison (11) Grayson (7) and Romilly (3).
Emma set up GlampUnders at the beginning of the year and as we can vouch for, stages the ULTIMATE sleepover party experience for children age 5-12… Emma’s attention to detail is absolutely incredible and she really does create magical memories that will last a lifetime.
Take a read below to find out how Emma juggles three children, a successful business and those pangs of mum guilt that we all experience…
What time did you wake up this morning?
What was your very first thought of the day?
Have I remembered to pack everything for today’s setups - I always pack extra ‘just in case’ but I still have that moment of panic when waking up on a day of party setups.
What are your 3 essentials for getting up, out and at 'em?
1. Respond to emails and enquiries - I like to get ahead of the day…
2. Make the beds & clear away breakfast things - I cannot walk out of the door with a clear head knowing I have to come back to a messy house!
3. Plan of action - I have 3.5 precious hours each morning before collecting my youngest from Pre-school, so planning for me is crucial.
Describe a typical working morning?
Weekend mornings tend to run a lot smoother than a weekday during term time, solely down to my incredibly supportive husband who takes over and organises the children, taxiing them to their various Saturday and Sunday morning clubs.
Mon - Thurs - out of the door by 8.15am, 3 school drops then home, coffee, admin, party prepping & packing.
Friday mornings - I do all 3 school drops, pickup a colleague then head off for the first sleepover setup of the day.
I then make it back just in time for 3.30pm school pickup depending on the locality of the jobs that day.
Weekends are early starts, heading out firstly to the job furthest away to take down from the previous night, all take downs are done in the morning then from around 12pm the new setups go up and we finally arrive home anywhere between 5pm - 6pm.
I then pour myself a glass of wine and finally begin to wind down!
Why did you decide to setup your business?
My son Grayson wanted a sleepover party for his birthday and me being me, having always organised and styled my children’s birthday parties, from making their cakes to setting the scene thought I would give it and go and add my own flavour to it and when I stepped back and saw the final setup and my son and friends reaction, I just knew that I could turn this into a successful business and so GlampUnders was born and it’s been an amazing journey so far.
What's the best part of your job?
The best part by far is revealing our setup to the guest of honour - we put so much love, care and attention into all our setups so seeing such excited happy little faces is incredibly rewarding.
#1 tip for juggling work and family life?
I’m not sure I have one, everyday brings different challenges and at times it can all seem extremely overwhelming. I now try not to get myself in such a tizzy if the day isn’t going to plan, I take a step back and make a new plan.
The happiest moment in your day?
Arriving home to my kiddies and husband
The hardest moment in your day?
Walking out the door early knowing I won’t be returning until late that day and feeling like I’m missing out on our weekend together.
Most overused word of the day?
Our work involves a lot of driving, some weekends we circle the entire M25 - so if I’m being truly honest it’s probably a ‘Bleep’ word!!! But the runner up word/phrase would most definitely be ‘this setup looks so cute’
Once the kids are in bed I...
Check email replies and enquires, I then flop on the sofa and generally fall asleep.
Best piece of advice for fellow Parents...
Don’t ever doubt you are not the best parent you can possibly be, in the beginning of setting my business up I had so much guilt I wasn’t giving my kids all my time like before, I struggled to find that work family life balance and felt very overwhelmed and almost like I wanted to give it all up. However, having now spoken with so many more likeminded mums and knowing I’m not alone, I am so glad I didn’t give up because I eventually found that balance and work family life become a whole lot easier.
