This week we are chatting to fitness QUEEN Kate Rowe-Ham, mum of 3 (Ollie 13, Sophie 10, Rupert 3) and founder of HIIT4LIFE. Kate struggled to find the time to exercise as a busy mum and was very good at finding excuses not to workout until it all got too much. Kate decided to get active and help herself, completing a Level 3 Diploma in Personal Training in the process, and then in turn has decided to help others. Understanding the challenges faced by all mums Kate now wants to empower women who have lost the belief in themselves. Take a read below to find out how Kate found her love for exercising again and how she makes her work ‘work’…
What time did you wake up this morning?
5.15am, thanks to Rupert my trusty wake up call.
What was your very first thought of the day?
My first thoughts are generally "right so today ……" and the lovely list of to do’s begins.
What are your 3 essentials for getting up, out and at ‘em?
1) Water & Coffee - I always start the day with a pint of water followed shortly by a shot of coffee
2) Exercise - As a busy PT finding personal time to exercise can be a struggle so I decided that I would do my workouts first thing and share them. So I now do FREE LIVE instagram workouts Monday - Friday at 6.35AM
3) Think a positive thought or daily gratitude with the kids , this just puts your mind in a good place and more importantly theirs.
Describe a typical working morning?
I am woken by Rupert at 5.30am or there about… then perhaps moan a little about how early it is but realise there is no choice but to get up and at them. So we go downstairs and I have my water and coffee. I’ll then check emails etc and pop Rupert in front of the TV and get ready to do my LIVE workouts… when I say ready I literally throw on the gym kit, there is nothing glamorous about my workouts, this is real life after all. Do the workouts between 6.35am-7am with various children interrupting looking for uniform, books etc or Rupert deciding now is a good time for the loo or maybe to sit on me when doing push ups .. anything goes. From there it’s carnage as I attempt to feed all 3 a relatively “healthy” breakfast , anything from porridge to waffles goes... as long as they eat. Kids all dropped at school / nursery for 8am. I then have a class at the school from 8.20am- 9.00am with the mums, lots of them which I LOVE … then 9am it’s all PT ….
Why did you decide to set up your business?
I know how hard it can be to find the time to exercise when juggling family , work and life in general. I want to get up and workout with those that want to and can. I also think it’s important that I show my kids that exercise an help them be strong mentally and physically. This might sound a bit nuts but I want to empower women like me who have lost all belief in themselves and don’t know how to get back. I want to see people who have lost self-confidence, smile and be proud of who they are. I’m wanting to inspire others and I want to encourage people to keep going. I hope that by offering FREE morning workouts I’m encouraging, inspiring and motivating other mums, women, people to see that you can feel fit, you can get fit and you can achieve your fitness goals.
What's the best part of your job?
Seeing women gain confidence from feeling good about themselves and realising fitness isn’t just about weight. It’s about energy, your mind and finding that they can cope better as a result of exercise.
#1 tip for juggling work and family life?
If I had the answer I’d be a genius. I don’t think there is one actual thing but I find that asking for help when you need IS OKAY. I have no help as such and no family close to me and am often picking up 3 kids from 3 places at the same time. I have to remind myself it's okay to call on a friend and that I am not superwoman and more importantly we are all in this together, we all find that juggle tough.
The happiest moment in your day?
Bedtime… and this has everything to do with just needing space and time and nothing to do with not loving my children. It’s just that moment when it’s quiet …. and I breathe.
The hardest moment in your day?
Pick up and everyone wanting to tell me what happened at the same time … I want to know but it normally ends up like an episode of Jerry Springer because “it’s my turn in the front .. “no it’s not … followed by “ I had started telling first.. “ “ No I had … thankfully I live close to school so it’s a fleeting moment!!
Most overused word of the day?
Technically not a word but I say “ do you understand” A LOT
Once the kids are in bed I…
FLOP … pour a lovely glass of wine , although currently avoiding it Monday - Thursday nights.. I normally make it to Wednesday, and then fall asleep watching TV with my husband who is fed up with me falling asleep! We are still on season one of Line of Duty ……
Best piece of advice for fellow Parents…
No one parents the same so I wouldn’t give advice as such but I think it’s important to know that you are not alone in what can be a really tough journey. Some days I’ll stand by my 5th wash of the day wanting to scream but i tell myself that there are millions of other people doing the same, but equally it’s okay to cry into the washing if you feel like because a million other people might be doing that to. It’s okay to feel like your personal space has been invaded and sometimes you just need you, it doesn’t mean you don’t love your family but as a parent we give ourselves entirely to our children, forgetting about ourselves, so if you can take 5 minutes each day for you, it’s not a lot but it’s better than nothing.
