I hope you are all well and surviving the School Summer holidays so far? I know I'm drinking more than in term time and doing more on-line shopping than is imaginable, so make of that what you will!
It was such a privilege to talk with you all last month at the ‘Mamas Meet Up’ with Pascale (@Style_Mum) and The No6 Clinic, what a fab network of ladies we have in our town. I know we didn't get to talk to everyone at the end but Pascale and I will be at the next event and available to chat if you want to come and find us. Speaking of the next event, MOTHER PUKKA!!!! I can't wait!
Now back to the drinking and on-line shopping, what's a girl to buy when the sales have almost ended and winter coats are marching into stores when its 24 degrees outside? Do we get tempted by a huge end of sale discount or be sensible and buy our winter coat and knitwear and wait it out?
The answer is, a bit of both. Sorry!
When the sales reach 75% off something crazy happens, we think we are smaller, bigger, taller, shorter or whatever it takes to get that dress in the wrong size. Stop it, your name may be Alice and online shopping may be like Wonderland but let's get a proper plan.
What do you actually need? Do you still have gaps in your summer wardrobe, did you lust after an item that was too expensive, but cost per wear you know you’ll wear it again and again? If the answer is yes then try to hunt down that item in your real size and if it still exists you’re in for a winner.
But what to look for to carry us through the transitional fashion period.
A Shift Dress can work for all the seasons and can to be one of the most versatile items in any woman’s wardrobe. If you are breastfeeding go for one that's a bit more flowing and wear a strapless fitted jersey dress underneath, (one dress up, one dress down). A shift dress can be transformed with the use of accessories or jackets and can be layered with knitwear and boots when the colder weather arrives.
An absolute favourite of mine over the past two seasons has to be the midi. It’s not for everyone as you have to be the right height but personally I have been wearing the midi throughout the seasons. When it's colder you can layer with knitwear, a leather jacket, scarf and ankle boots, but equally it looks fab with gladiator sandals or sliders and a pair of sunglasses.
A Leather Jacket
Whats not to love about a leather jacket? It can instantly make an outfit look cool with minimal effort and no shouting about it, it wipes clean if the kids spill anything on you, thus protecting you. It also works under a coat as a layer and looks fab under a sleeveless piece of oversized knitwear.
An ankle boot is a transitional must have. I know I have some you screaming ‘they cut my legs off, you don't know what your talking about’ but you obviously haven't found the right pair and without knowing it keep gravitating to the same style and getting the same result. Once you've worked out the right boot your onto a winner!
The humble denim jacket, that item of clothing that saw us through looking relatively cool at secondary school is back with vengeance. Its boxy, oversized distressed and even embroidered with badges, flowers or a customer personalisation. Sling it on over anything and even wear it OVER your denim jacket when the cooler weather sets in.
Shops I’d be shopping at for transitional prices are ASOS, TOPSHOP, Warehouse and Zara. I have even bought a couple of items from Marks and Spencer recently as they have upped their fashion game, a basic jersey midi dress at a very reasonable price can be found at an M&S near you. Wear it with a leather jacket or a boyfriend denim jacket, trainers, gladiators or those ankle boots you managed to track down to get you through those in-between fashion months.
I wish you luck during the rest of your summer holiday and see you on the other side.
