We can all wave goodbye to Summer and what a fantastic summer we’ve had, it seems to have gone on forever which is handy when you have children, as we have been able to take full advantage of outdoor space at home or in the local parks and playgrounds. Now the weather has turned, we look to our selection of outerwear in desperation, disgust and despair. Suddenly a little denim throw over will not cut it in the rain and cold.
I am a big believer that your coat in Winter is your outfit. Let’s face it, when your in and out of the car or standing in the playground people tend to only see your footwear and outerwear, so make sure these are spot on and that you feel fabulous in them.
If there was ever a season to bag yourself a good coat its now. Outerwear has never been more on trend and I can deliver the good news that the humble PUFFA is very much EN VOGUE! Hoorah for all those Football and Rugby mums like myself, that stand for hours and hours on the side-lines trying to rock the Puffa. It is now a thing of beauty with the high street delivering some fab designs. I’m a massive fan of the Topshop Velvet short Bomber. It’s nodding at two trends at once and comes in a beautiful blue that screams chic, modern and stylish. For those loving the pink coat trend they also have a beautiful light pink puffa. Slightly A-line it’s a bit more dressy, perfect for those going from the playground to a morning meeting in the cold.
Leather and faux fur are still marching on strong. Embellished leather can be found in most high street stores and I couldn’t be happier with my Zara one, it takes a simple jeans and jumper outfit to a new height of ‘rock chic’ Sometimes a good selection of jackets is all you need to make your wardrobe work. I know I can add fur or leather to an outfit and it totally changes the look. A simple plain jumper can be transformed by adding a fur collar and a leather jacket, easy to do and functional to wear.
The Cape is back, but it’s not one I recommend to mums of little ones that need carrying around a lot. Although the concept of throwing a cape over a leather jacket or denim jacket seams like a good idea it all gets bundled up when you have to carry your child and push the buggy at the same time, we’ve all been there right? Quite a lot! I’d stick to clean lines that don’t ride up too much when you move your arms above your head.
Tweed is a big hit and fab for mums. The line is longer, just below the knee and the natural fabric and colouring of tweed means it’s a good one for mucking around with the kids, the mess just blends in while you still look relatively smart! Winner! I’m loving the Prince of Wales Check in H&M and I’m informed by my very good friend @Style_Mum that Zara have a few with her name on too.
Oversized Boyfriend coats are everywhere and if like me you get cold, the extra room means you can layer a denim jacket or leather jacket under the coat and flick up the collar to show the layering details.
However, if this style is not for you as you find yourself getting lost in the shape then try one of the belted dressing gown options or a classic trench. These really cinch in your waist and give you definition where you want it. Just make sure it actually sits at your waist and extra fabric doesn’t bulge around your boobs, this can be really unflattering! Try to stick to one that’s simple and lightweight in fabric. The natural design of these coats means it double layers anyway so you don’t want masses of fabric making you look bigger than you are. Sleek, lightweight and soft tailoring is what this look is all about.
If like me, your life of children and work is quite a military operation the Military inspired coats maybe for you. Well cut navy, black or khaki coats with bold buttons and embellishments are a good cross over for those that need something practical for day but equally work well over a dress or an outfit for going out in the evening. Zara have quite a few options of these in store at the moment and I think they look very smart and classy.
Happy Shopping Mamas and keep warm.
